Here are a few furniture care tips to keep in mind:
Always follow the manufacturers recommendation for cleaning and maintenance. Remember to check the upholstery cleaning code (S, W, WS, or X) and clean with a product recommended for that code.
Cleaning Code "S" :
For general maintenance, vacuum or brush frequently. Spot clean using a water-free solvent-based cleaning agent.
Cleaning Code "W" :
For general maintenance, vacuum or brush frequently. Spot clean using a water-based cleaning agent. Means that this furniture piece can be cleaned with water.
Cleaning Code "SW" :
For general maintenance, vacuum or brush frequently. Spot clean using a mild solvent, upholstery shampoo, or mild detergent. This code means that both solvent and water can be used to clean your furniture.
Cleaning Code "X" :
For general maintenance, vacuum or light brush. This code means that both water or solvents should not be used as cleaning agent to this piece of furniture. It should be cleaned using a soft brush. Water-based & solvent cleaners may cause dis-coloration, fading or distortion of the fabric. See recommendation from the manufacturer.
Cushions with a filling of foam/fiber should be vigorously shaken regularly to ensure form stability.
Expect a "breaking in" period for your new sofa. The cushion fillings need time and sue to stabilize so your cushions will feel more smooth and comfortable.
All leathers and fabrics will stretch during use. To acheieve the best comfort, covers cannot fit too tightly. Therefore, some creasing may occur, while adding to the character to your sofa.
Make legs are fitted tightly to the sofa and check them on a regular basis.
Use caution when covering upholstered furniture with dark-colored blankets and sheets. Dye may rub off or bleed onto the fabric.
Clean up spills immediately. Use a blotting action rather than a wiping action.
Vacuuming your upholstered furniture per the manufacturers recommendation. Dust and dirt can wear and damage your fabric
Before attempting to clean any fabric, always check the manufacturer's preferred method of cleaning. Pre-test a small hidden area on the item, before applying the cleaner to the entire piece.
Avoid placing newspaper on upholstered fabric, printing inks can rub off easily, and is difficult to remove.
Always check the leather type before applying a leather cleaner or conditioner. Aniline and nubuck leathers typically need specialized products. Remember to always check the manufacturers recommended cleaning methods first.
Dirty furnace/air conditioner filters and vents can cause dust build-up on furnishings. Regular cleaning will help eliminate dust build-up.
Occasionally turn mattresses end for end, and flip over so bottom side is on top. Remember to check for recommended maintenance instructions from the manufacturer.
If you notice your Kitchen Cabinets are becoming coated in grease, make sure you have a clean and effective hood range system. Eliminate the grease build-up with regular cleaning.
Use a protective pad when writing with a ballpoint pen on wood surfaces.
Avoid placing plastic or rubber objects on a wood finish, as their ingredients react with those of the finish.
Use pads, cloth or felt to protect the furniture surface from plastic, rubber, hot dishes, beverages, bookends, flower pots and vases.
Avoid extremes in room humidity. Too high or too low humidity can cause wood to warp or the glue lines to fail.
Lift and place objects, do not drag them across the furniture surface.
Avoid placing furniture in direct sunlight, as sunlight causes fading. For the first 6-8 weeks, when the item is first absorbing the surrounding light, keep the surfaces clear of any objects or decorations. It is possible that uneven light absorption could result in permanent marks and circles. At first, new furniture will need time to absorb light before it will match the tone of your existing furniture.
Rotate cushions per the manufacturers recommendation. This allows for a more even wear on the cushion.
Avoid extreme changes in temperature. Arrange furniture away from radiators, registers and air-conditioning units.
Rotate accessories on furniture so they do not sit in the same spot all of the time.
Use a quality furniture polish. It will lessen your chance of expensive refinishing jobs. Polish approximately once a month.
Use a soft, lint-free, absorbent cloth for cleaning and polishing.
Avoid wax polishes. Regular use of wax polishes may result in the build-up of wax film on the surface of the furniture. This build-up may then pick up dirt, smoke and other pollutants in the air, which may result in smudges and streaks.
Avoid silicone polishes. Silicone oil is an ingredient used by many furniture polish makers to create a high degree of shine. Silicone seeps into even the most lacquered finishes, making it difficult to remove.
Make minor repairs while they are still small.
Use the proper materials, or professional help to repair badly damaged surfaces.
Use caution when attempting to repair a dent in wood furniture. Make sure you know what type of wood or veneer & substrate that you are dealing with. If you are not sure, you may need to consult a furniture repair technician.
Do not attempt a repair, if you are not confident you can fix it! Furniture is an investment, and you will risk decreasing the value if you cannot successfully repair it. Contact a furniture technician for professional in-home assistance.
Wicker furniture should be brushed or vacuumed for general maintenance. Wicker can withstand humidity, but should not be left outdoors in rain, direct sunlight, or dew. All of these can permanently damage wicker.
Dust frequently.
